Clara Barchard
Clara's father was chief Ira Vernon Barchard. Ira was a Pottawatomie Indian from the Potawatomie tribes near the great Lakes near Illinois. Ira and his mother were adopted and Ira was given the Christian name of Ira Vernon Barchard by missionary and farmer John Barchard shortly after the Blackhawk wars which ended in 1832.
Clara's mother according to Exira Iowa records is listed as Annie Flannery. Des plains Illinois micro film list Annie Flannery as Anna Brown, and list two Barchard's in the Ira Vernon Barchard household as servants (adopted).
The Potawatomie tribes were friends with the settlers in the great lakes area.
Joe Wheeler and Clara Barchard eloped in a wagon to homestead in Iowa.
