Martin along with his brother Gardner and two friends Samuel Aldrich and Eleazer Sanger walked to St. Johnsbury sometime after the Revolutionary War. There Martin , Gardner , Eleazer Sanger and a man by the name of William C. Arnold homesteaded lots with adjoining corners. They cleared the land , built cabins .The neighborhood became know as the Four Corners , the name is still in use today. Sometime after the move Martin went to New York for a short period of time, married and returned to St. Johnsbury were he frist appears in the St. Johnsbury land record's of 1790.
