Tet Offensive
The tet offensive was an invasion on South Vietnam by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army beginning in 1968 and ending in 1969. Tet is the Vietnamese New Year so operations by the Viet Cong were unexpected. But on the night of January 29, the VC and other elements of the North Vietnamese support began their attack on the South Vietnamese with their US support. The plan involved three phases, the first, the PAVN, or the Vietnam People's Army would attack the rural areas of South Vietnam. This would allow the VC to be able to move freely and concealed in the rural areas of South Vietnam. In the second phase, the VC would attack the centers of the country. They hoped that this would cause the government to collapse or the people to revolt against the government. This way the US and other foreign elements would be isolated and forced to withdraw. While they were isolated, they would be attacked by elements of the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army.
