George purchased a 288 acre farm east of Exira in 1882, he moved his family there from Cook County, ILL. It was considered virgin prairie at that time. The first house they built was small and a few years later was replaced by a large two story home. The original home was then used for the hired help. In the early 1900's a new modern home complete with steam heat, hot and cold running water and bathrooms up and downstairs was built. In the 1920's this house burned and another house similar, but larger was built to replaced it.
George's son Joe, came to help his father break out the land then returned to Des Plains and married Clara. It was after the marriage he returned to Exira and the farm with his father. Joe took over operations of the farm in later years. Oscar aka Doc, acquired another 160 acres west of the home place.
After Joe died the farm was split up between the children, Lauren built a new one story home in 1934 on his part of the land which was about 1/4 of a mile from the home place. The tillable farmland still remains in the Wheeler Family . Erwin Wheeler's son Ramon, bought Lauren's land and his sister Carol and her husband Russell own the rest. The old house sat vacant for years after Elda's death, but was sold and restored by the new owners.

OBITUARY
As stated last week, George W. Wheeler passed to test on last Thursday moring, being found cold in the embrace of death when his wife awoke in the morning. Thus, possibly he passed from a life of peace and quietude without a moments waring, departing from the earthly scenes he loved and enjoyed, crossing over the river of time to the great beyond, leaving behind a record of a well spent past.
The departed was born in Canada on July 13, 1833. He moved to Illinois and on December 6, 1855 was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Ceylina Poyer Who survives him and deeply mourns the loss of her life companion and support who through the storms and vicictudes of life has been her joy and comfort and shared with her the manifold blessings and sunshine that has strewn their pathway through the many years of their united pilgrimage. They moved to Audubon County in 1882 and settled on a farm east of town where they continued to live until 1895 ,when they moved to town where they have since resided enjoying the peaceful quietude of their home , being bountifully supplied and surrounded with the common comforts and necessities of life. He leaves behind a dutiful wife , three sons and one daughter and eighteen grand-children, besides many true friends and loyal associates who Deeply mourn the loss of a devoted husband , a kind and indulgent father and an appreciative Freind. He was a faithful member of the Christian church and was one of the many who worked days that he might see the new church edifice completed. He was the first on to be called since the new church was completed and pass over the river of death to the eternal city.
The funeral services were held in the Christian church, Sunday , at two o'clock in the afternoon conducted by the pastor , Elder L. H. Humphreys, after which the remains were taken to the Exira Cemetery and laid to rest under a mound of mother earth where in years to come the loved ones of earth will often go to gay tokens of love and graditude and fondly cherish the sweet and precious memories of other days.
